VR-RAW: Virtual Reality for Relaxation and Wellbeing for Community Members Affected by Serious Youth Violence and Gang Activity

“This VR programme is a fantastic example of the innovative methods we are using to help young people and families who have been affected by serious youth violence and crime. The results of this pilot scheme are extremely promising, with young people and parents telling us they’ve seen an improvement in their mental and emotional wellbeing, and an increased awareness of support services offered by Westminster City Council”

Councillor Aicha Less, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communities and Public Protection

Since August 2021, FRED has been working with Westminster City Council to deliver a series of VR programmes with a diverse range of groups in the community that are/have been impacted by serious youth violence and gang activity.

The main aim of the programmes is to promote the wellbeing of community members - including young people, parents and school pupils, in a fun and engaging way. The programme also aims to improve engagement between young people and the council’s Integrated Gangs and Exploitation Unit (IGXU). The IGXU works to identify young males and females at risk of getting involved in gangs or exploitation, and offers long-term support and guidance to young people and families to help them make positive lifestyle choices.

The results have been fantastic; attendance and engagement with the programme has been really high, and associated with positive shifts in mood and behaviour, as well as positive and meaningful social connection. Further, participants of the programme have connected to other appropriate services, opportunities and support channels and have a vastly improved knowledge and understanding of the services the IGXU offers to vulnerable young people.
